Illwerke Tourismus as a business unit of Illwerke Voralberger Kraftwerke AG.

Voralberg has a history of the electricity industry that goes back over one hundred years. Through its abundance of water and the geographical conditions, the province provided ideal conditions for an economically significant production of hydroelectric power. The Vorarlberger Kraftwerke AG (VKW), which was founded as a private company in 1901, became the regional company for the public provision of electricity. The Vorarlberger Illwerke AG (Illwerke) was founded in 1924 in view of generating off peak- and balanced energy for their partners in the European power union. In the course of the liberalisation of the European electricity market the companies were grouped together under the name of illwerke vkw on 1 January 2001.

Within illwerke vkw the Illwerke cover the business areas of generation, water and tourism. The VKW cover the business areas of distribution, sales and marketing and waste management.  

Technically "Illwerke Tourismus" is not a company, but rather a business unit within illwerke vkw. For external communication “Illwerke Tourismus” acts as an umbrella brand for the tourist attractions owned by the Illwerke.

The services of the cable railways, the lifts and the catering businesses on the Golm and the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe areas result from the two 100% subsidiaries of Illwerke:
